The historic South Main Village is known for its multifarious blend of locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, art galleries and entertainment venues. And one little market that offers the flair and convenience of an East Coast-inspired mini-mart known as a bodega may be unfamiliar to those in Fort Worth used to the Texas-sized grocery stories and chain restaurants.
A little over a year ago, Tasha Monticure opened the doors to Bodega South Main, inviting locals to vibe out to the smooth tunes while they pick up necessities and grab a fresh-pressed panini or zucchini muffin from the deli.
A former corporate caterer who has been in the food and beverage industry since she was a teen, Tasha created a menu full of her favorite soups, quiche recipes, cakes, pies and sandwiches. “We bake everything in-house,” Tasha says with a smile. Her love for preparing the food can be seen in her eyes and smelt throughout the bodega. This was also evident when she stayed open during the early February ice storm this year. She slept across the street at a friend’s place so she could stay open, staying up all night provide hot food for SoMa residents when everyone else was closed.
Using high-quality items and incorporating healthy ingredients into nearly every dish are her niche. The shelves are stocked with staple goods and hidden gems like truffle pasta sauce and Fly By Jing. Her kale Caesar salad is unbeatable with the finely trimmed tender kale leaves, croutons made in-house, and dressing packed full of flavor.
“People want high quality across the board whether they work down here or live here,” Tasha says. Along with an exceptional shopping experience, it is possible to catch a dance performance or art show on any given day. Bodega South Main provides the community of SoMA with the essentials that feed all five senses. “We are creating an environment that sounds good, feels good and tastes good. People come in, and it makes them happy,” she says.
